Why patches

A patch left standing comes back bigger.

Yellow nutsedge, thistles and dock spread out from one spot. What you leave this year stands wider next year, and soil movement drags it across the rest of the field.

  • A yellow nutsedge plant makes about 500 tubers per season in our climate, and those stay viable for years.
  • A rotary harrow can drag tubers up to 40 metres, so work an infested field last and clean the machine.
  • A dock plant makes around 7,000 seeds a year on average and regrows from root fragments.

What you do with it

A record that lasts several years.

In Flanders there is no reporting duty for yellow nutsedge, but there is a control duty and a ban on growing bulb, tuber and root crops on an infested field. In the Netherlands a growing ban applies to the infested part.

  • In Flanders a field counts as infested from more than 10 square metres of infestation, and that is exactly what a map records.
  • By flying again every year you see whether the patch is shrinking or growing.
